Entangled in a weave war

Poet Ntsiki Mazwai got a nasty surprise on Monday when her usual Twitter tirade on weaves bred an unsavoury response from local reality TV star Dineo Ranaka.

Mazwai began her day with a series of tweets about her dislike for the popular women’s hairstyle. She tweeted: “This foreign object which takes the dignity out of black women. This weave thing was never FOR us… it takes our hairlines and leaves us bitter. The weave came here to destroy us…”

All was well till she commented on Ranaka’s conversation with a friend. Ranaka’s friend had complimented her on her weave and said she would like to have the same style. Mazwai asked in disbelief whether it could be shared, and Ranaka responded in Xhosa saying: “Forget about our hair and go bath instead.”

She added: “@ntsikimazwai ave ubhora Shem! The fake hair vs natural debate is totes tired. Do you Dali. As I brush MY fake hair with NO care!”

Mazwai retaliated, saying: “Instead of worrying about my hygiene u shud worry about your baby daddies sisi @DineoRanaka ur on number what now? A baby daddy for each decade of your life! Ching Ching!”

Mazwai was referring to the fact that Ranaka’s two children are fathered by two different men.

To this Ranaka replied: “Ntsiki even ‘my baby daddy’ count is TIRED NEWS dear. Be original. Like me. My ovaries are more talented than your poetry.”

This is when Mazwai decided to wave a white flag and declare peace, saying: “I luv u & always will. Even when we fight again. I still Luv u,” to which Ranaka responded by saying: “Luv u 2 ausi my ovaries luv u too.”

The two trended on Twitter during and after this twar, with many people picking sides. But some were unimpressed.

Tweeter @mwelimasilela said: “On a Monday morning Ntsiki Mazwai and Dineo Ranaka hurling insults at each other, what is it they are teaching all of us?”
