One ordinary day, Mpiletso Motumi, my colleague and the editor of this page, approached me and asked that I review the Huawei Watch GT 2.

As someone who knows little to nothing about new technology, I was extremely hesitant and initially declined her request for me to spend two weeks wearing the watch, and providing a short write-up for The Star’s Tech Page.

“But you work out regularly and this watch will be able to assist you to track how well our exercise is going, and it really is user friendly,” Ms Motumi said.

After much cajoling, I reluctantly relented and agreed to test the watch out and review. What an excellent decision I took.

The Huawei Watch GT 2 42mm is a new offering from the Chinese-company’s offering, and boasts Bluetooth calling, music playback functionalities and, most excitingly, a brand new multi-sports mode with richer programmes and better monitoring.

It tracks every single calorie a user burns, including the amount the steps one takes to reach the magical 10 000-steps mark. Of course, I can proudly proclaim to have exceeded this target in the two weeks I used the device.

But the most important feature, for me, was the heart-rate monitoring and precise body recognition function. As someone who comes from a family with a history of heart illnesses, it was anomalous that I didn’t know that a normal resting heart rate for adults was between 60 to 100 beats per minute.

The device tracked this for me, as well as sending me reminders to stand up and stretch when it felt that I had been resting too much.

However, the feature best enjoyed was being able to answer my phone and read text messages on it. The stares I would get in public when I would casually speak into the watch, like a township James Bond, were enjoyable – albeit temporarily.

A slave-driver that she is, I’m glad Ms Motumi nagged me into using the Huawei Watch GT 2. It definitely is user friendly.
