With the summer holidays fast approaching, there’s no better time to unwind with a glass of wine, preferably somewhere scenic, relaxed, and close enough that the kids don’t start asking “Are we there yet?” every five minutes.

As a mother of two tween daughters, I love exploring the Cape Winelands, but I’m not keen on spending hours in the car in the middle of summer (or paying for a long Uber ride back home).

The good news? You don’t need to travel far. Within 20 minutes of Cape Town’s city centre, you’ll find a host of incredible, family-friendly wine farms that tick all the boxes: great food, stunning views, and a welcoming atmosphere for both adults and kids.

Here’s your local list of must-visit estates for the perfect summer day out.

Constantia Valley

Steenberg Vineyards

One of Cape Town’s oldest wine farms continues to innovate with its Storytelling Tasting Menu, where guests can explore themed tastings such as Bubbly Exploration or Sense of Sauvignon. It’s stylish yet relaxed, perfect for parents and children who need a peaceful moment amid the summer rush.

Buitenverwachting

This family favourite truly lives up to its name. Adults can enjoy tastings in the historic cellar while kids play on the sprawling lawns shaded by a 250-year-old Norfolk pine. Bring a picnic blanket and enjoy charcuterie platters and lawn lounging.

Constantia Glen

Perched on the Constantiaberg slopes, Constantia Glen is famed for its ultra-premium cool-climate wines and breathtaking views. Order their flammkuchen and a cheese platter, a local favourite for lazy lunches with a view.

Beau Constantia

With sweeping mountain views and a trendy vibe, Beau Constantia’s small-batch wines, vibrant Sunday sessions, and picnic experiences make it ideal for families. Vegetarian and non-alcoholic options mean everyone’s included

Constantia Royale

This small, family-owned estate produces exquisite Sauvignon Blanc in a truly unique setting - tastings take place in a historic tunnel under the M3!

Durbanville Wine Valley

Durbanville Hills

Just a quick drive from the CBD, Durbanville Hills offers sweeping city views and wine tastings with a twist - think chocolate, biltong, or cheese pairings. Their interactive visitor centre and cellar tours make it a hit for curious kids (and parents).

Klein Roosboom

Quirky and charming, Klein Roosboom has transformed old wine tanks into intimate tasting “caves” with whimsical names like Marrakech and Versailles. Try a sabrage class or blend your own red wine - it’s both fun and educational.

Meerendal

This family-friendly estate offers everything from wine and sweet pairings to kids’ tastings and outdoor activities like mountain biking, hiking, and padel. Their full-moon hikes are a must for adventure-loving families.

Diemersdal

A Durbanville landmark since 1885, Diemersdal’s relaxed tasting room serves three affordable tasting options, no booking required. It’s ideal for spontaneous days when you just want to drop in and savour the simplicity.

Nitída

Small but mighty, Nitída is known for its hand-crafted wines and warm hospitality. Tastings are held in a working barrel cellar carved into the hillside, and with two on-site restaurants, it’s easy to linger for lunch.

Groot Phesantekraal

This family-run farm offers wine tastings paired with hearty platters and flatbreads, all served with old-fashioned hospitality. Their restaurant is a hidden gem, and members of their Wine Herd Club enjoy extra perks.

De Grendel

Set on the Tygerberg hills, De Grendel is renowned for its panoramic views of Table Mountain and Cape Town’s skyline. Pair a wine tasting with a gourmet meal at the award-winning restaurant for the full experience.

Durbanville Wine Safari

For something different, hop aboard an open-air safari vehicle and explore the Durbanville Wine Valley. The guided routes stop at top estates such as Bloemendal, Klein Roosboom, and De Grendel. A fun way to experience multiple farms without the driving. Departs from Protea Hotel, Durbanville

A few last tips

Many tasting rooms require advance bookings during summer, so plan ahead. Remember to taste responsibly - assign a driver, grab an Uber, or join one of the city’s wine tours or bus experiences for peace of mind.
