With the Easter long weekend around the corner, many South Africans are in need of a break, but not the price tag that often comes with it.

Between soaring flight costs and a fresh round of price increases expected from April 1, the idea of a far-flung holiday is starting to feel a little out of reach.

The good news? You don’t actually have to go far to feel like you’ve escaped.

A short drive, a cosy stay and a change of scenery can do wonders.

Whether you’re after mountain views, seaside air or a quiet village with good coffee and even better conversation, these small towns deliver charm without the hefty travel bill.

Here are nine easy staycation ideas, all within roughly two hours of South Africa’s major cities.

Near Cape Town

Just outside Cape Town, you’re spoiled for choice when it comes to countryside and coastal escapes.

Riebeek-Kasteel: Tucked away in the Swartland, this village feels like stepping into a slower pace of life. Think olive tastings, wine farms and leafy streets lined with galleries and cafés. It’s the kind of place where a long lunch easily turns into sunset drinks.

Gansbaai: If the ocean is calling, Gansbaai answers with rugged beauty. Known for its dramatic cliffs and unspoilt coastline, it’s perfect for long walks, fresh seafood and switching off from city noise.

Elgin: Less than an hour out, Elgin offers crisp country air and rolling orchards. It’s especially lovely this time of year, with apple farms, forest trails and wine estates that feel far removed from the bustle of the city.

Near Johannesburg

For those in Johannesburg, a quick escape doesn’t require much planning, just a full tank and a sense of adventure.

Parys: Set along the Vaal River, Parys has become a favourite for weekenders. Its mix of antique shops, quirky boutiques and relaxed eateries makes it ideal for a wander-heavy getaway.

Magaliesburg: Mountains, fresh air and plenty of space to breathe, Magaliesburg is a reset button for city dwellers. From spa retreats to hiking trails, it’s an easy win for a last-minute Easter plan.

Cullinan: Steeped in history, this former mining town is all charm. Expect heritage buildings, cosy cafés and a laid-back atmosphere that invites you to linger a little longer.

Near Durban

If you’re based in Durban, both the coast and the Midlands are within easy reach.

Ballito: A favourite for good reason, Ballito combines beach life with a polished holiday feel. Early morning walks along the promenade and dolphin sightings are part of the package.

Scottburgh: For something more low-key, Scottburgh offers classic seaside simplicity. It’s family-friendly, unfussy and perfect for a relaxed break by the water.

Howick: Head inland and you’ll find Howick, a Midlands gem known for its artsy edge and natural beauty. Waterfalls, craft shops and cosy spots to eat make it ideal for a slower kind of escape.
