When it comes to local vacation hotspots in South Africa, Durban continues to stand out as a premier destination.

That’s according to award-winning music producer Prince Kaybee, whose real name is Kabelo Motsamai.

In an ongoing debate about the best local holiday destination, Motsamai firmly backed Durban over Cape Town.

The conversation was sparked by a viral tweet from social media user Koena Moabelo (@Koena_za), who posed the question: “Cape Town or Durban? Which one is the best for a vacation?”

South Africans quickly weighed in, with many sharing strong and varied opinions.

Among them was Motsamai, who didn’t hold back in his praise.

“Durban is the best place Africa has ever had, EVER," he said.

Other users echoed similar sentiments while also highlighting the differences between the two cities.

@Felicialouws said: “For a beach vacation, Durbs. For Instagram pics, Cape Town.”

Meanwhile, @mxo_crocs added: “Durban is more welcoming, the atmosphere has a positive vibe. In Cape Town, you feel like a tourist, unlike in Durban, it feels like home away from home.”

Some users preferred a balance depending on their needs.

@ReubenPhala1 commented: “Fun Durban ; peace Cape Town; I am old now I go with Cape Town 😉”.

While @LLunga18 said: “Durban wins in many aspects. Lovely weather throughout the year, reasonable cost of living compared to other cities, less crime, etc.”

Historically, Durban was regarded as Africa’s playground long before Cape Town rose to global prominence as a world-class destination and European tourist hotspot.

However, Durban’s tourism sector faced setbacks in recent years due to COVID-19, the July unrest, and the loss of Blue Flag status for some beaches following the April 2022 floods.

Despite these challenges, the city remains a key hub for Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) tourism and is actively working to reclaim its status as a leading leisure destination.

According to Durban mayor Cyril Xaba, the city is committed to maintaining and improving its tourism appeal.

Ahead of the Easter holidays, Durban anticipated welcoming 1.2 million visitors and deployed 1,000 police officers to enhance safety at entertainment venues and popular attractions.

“We are working closely with the private sector to expand tourism offerings, ensuring that visitors not only feel safe but are encouraged to stay longer and experience more of what Durban has to offer,” said Xaba.

As the debate continues, one thing remains clear: Durban still holds a special place in the hearts of many South Africans seeking sun, sea, and a welcoming coastal escape.
