South African rapper Da L.E.S (real name Leslie Jonathan Mampe, Jr.) has opened up about his move to Houston, Texas, in the US

On his YouTube channel, “Da L.E.S Network,” he shared: “We’re moving. We’re moving to Houston, Texas. I’m going out there to spend some time with my family in the States.”

Da L.E.S was born in Washington, D.C., and spent his early years in the United States before moving to the northern suburbs of Johannesburg, South Africa, where he was raised.

In July 2024, the artist suffered a stroke that left him hospitalised for a month. After he was discharged, it was reported that he initially moved to Washington, however, he has officially revealed that he is leaving Johannesburg for Texas.

Despite his relocation to America, the musician assured his local fans that this is not permanent, adding on the video: “Don’t worry, SA, I’ll be back.”

Da L.E.S recently held a farewell party with friends, including Thato Lloyd ‘L-Tido’ Madonsela, who expressed support, stating: “I know when you come back, everything is going to be good. You know we got you, we love you, and we have your back forever.”

Fans have also shared their thoughts on his announcement.

One user, @saidibakari3300, welcomed him to Houston, noting: “It’s becoming what Atlanta was for young black culture 20 years ago.

"Rest assured, there are plenty of South Africans in the city, and the community will embrace you in ways that will remind you of home. All the best in your recovery.”

Another fan, @TRILLTARANTINO, praised Da L.E.S for his contributions to South African hip hop, saying: “Les, you’re a real living legend. We’ll always love you for what you did for SA hip hop and how you carried the North on your back.

"We’ve lost so many brothers in this thing of ours over the years, and I just want you to know that we appreciate you. Much love and respect, brother.”

Following his stroke, Da L.E.S took to his channel and opened up about his recovery in a previous emotional video.

“I suffered a stroke, and people thought I was going to die, but I made it,” he said, reflecting on the relief he felt upon waking after a month in the hospital.

“I feel good. I’m so happy that I’m still here. One minute you’re cool, the next you experience the worst,” he added, urging people to appreciate life and take care of their health.
