Two-time Emmy nominee and comedian Loyiso Gola is in Cape Town with a new show “Popular Culture”.
The Cape Town comedian launched “Popular Culture” in the UK last year. After sharing it with crowds in Joburg last week, Gola decided it was time to bring it home.
“Popular Culture” is a commentary on contemporary popular culture.
He also uses personal anecdotes, observations and narratives he has experience in his travels with different cultures.
“Its commentary on contemporary pop culture, with the usual take on the political situation in South Africa and the globe at large,” he said.
The comedian said it was always great to perform at his place of birth.
“It’s a home-ground advantage for me because Cape Town is my favourite audience. It holds a special place in my heart because this is where my career started,” he said.
Gola, 38, said he was grateful for how comedy shaped his career.
“As a career, comedy has shaped my existence thus far. That’s how the world knows me,” he said.
“Comedy allows you to be yourself and it is a very fortunate position to be in.”
Gola said it was perfect timing to launch the show in the UK last year.
“Shows change as time progresses. The longer you hold on to it, the more it changes and evolves into something more congruent,” he said.
He continued: “It was great to start there, but I think the version of the show I am bringing to South Africa is 100 times better.”
Gola said he was grateful for the friendships he’s built in the industry since the launch of his career in 2001.
“I’ve built a sense of brotherhood and sisterhood among people I work with. I value that. Some of the strongest relationships in my life are from this circle and I am thankful for that,” he said.
Cape Town comedian Yaaseen Barnes has shared the stage with Gola on numerous occasions.
Barnes described Gola as one of South Africa’s greatest comedic exports.
“He’s made a career here and abroad. His thought processing is always interesting because his logic allows you to make sense of complicated situations,” he said.
“At the same time, allowing you to see a different perspective on complex situations. I appreciate that he is an original thinker and that he can add laughs to any situation.”
“Popular Culture” will take place at the Homecoming Centre on October 21 and 22. Tickets are available on Quicket.
