This Heritage Month, the Mustadafin Foundation shone a much-deserved spotlight on South Africa’s elders, the unsung heroes who embody the resilience, wisdom, and cultural narratives of their communities. On Sunday, 21 September 2025, the foundation welcomed 150 seniors from various communities, including Khayelitsha, Hanover Park, Manenberg, Delft, Tafelsig, and Bridgetown, to a joyous celebration at its head office in Bridgetown.
The gathering served not just as a celebration, but as an impactful reminder of the shared responsibility we hold in protecting and nurturing our heritage. The day was filled with music, laughter, and connection, underlining the critical role these seniors play in shaping our understanding of cultural identity, history, and community values.
As attendees enjoyed a festive braai, performances by the Broadway Cultural Group and Innie Kaap Cultural Group thrilled the audience with vibrant displays of Cape heritage. The energetic music brought together generations, sparking conversations and memories that wove the fabric of community life.
Ghairunisa Johnstone-Cassiem, director of the Mustadafin Foundation, eloquently captured the sentiments of the day. “Heritage lives in our elders,” she stated. “They are the gems of our communities, carriers of wisdom, strength, and resilience. Honouring them is not only about looking back; it is also about learning how to build a stronger, more compassionate future. At Mustadafin, we believe that when we value our seniors, we value ourselves.”
This event underscores Mustadafin’s commitment to serving vulnerable populations, especially seniors, whose vital contributions often go unnoticed in the face of rapid changes in society. The foundation's efforts to honour their legacy highlight the importance of inclusivity and respect for all ages.
Mustadafin also expressed heartfelt gratitude to its partners and donors, including Birkett Sheep, the Broadway Cultural Band, Creative Kids Educare, Gatti’s Ice Cream, Innie Kaap, Springbok Deli, and Woolworths South Africa. Their generosity ensured that the day was not merely an event, but a celebration of dignity and joy for the elders who attended.
