Cape Town - Police are investigating a case of business robbery and kidnapping after suspects robbed Razacks Supermarket in Elsies River at gunpoint on Wednesday afternoon.
Police spokesperson Captain Frederick van Wyk said the suspects took an undisclosed amount of cash and cigarettes.
“According to reports, four unknown males entered the shop. Two suspects had (a) firearm positively armed who threatened the three victims (foreign nationals) to lay on the floor. One suspect took the cash from the cash register, and the others took cigarettes, and one of the suspects grabbed one of the victims, a 32- year- old man.
“They pulled the victim outside and pushed him inside a white Quantum that was parked in front of the shop, and the suspects drove away in an unknown direction. No shots fired and no injuries sustained during the incident,” he said.
Elsies River Community Policing Forum (CPF) spokesperson Imraahn Mukaddam said this was very concerning as they have had a number of kidnappings in their area, especially foreign nationals, who are very vulnerable.
“The modus in all of these crimes are similar, and it's really worrying. It's been carrying on like this for more than a year with no real progress on the part of Saps to get to the bottom of this problem.
“In all of these incidents, foreign nationals are involved. It would appear that kidnappings of foreign nationals are lucrative because they are vulnerable and often pay the ransom without too much resistance,” he said.
