Police say while their Extortion Task Team continues to make “steady” inroads in tackling the crime, there was a notable lack of cases getting reported to them.
Western Cape police commissioner Thembisile Patekile this week issued an appeal to residents and victims of extortion to come forward with information.
“The SAPS is aware of various claims in relation to extortion circulating on different social media platforms, but are convinced that not all these complaints and/or alleged crimes have been reported to the South African Police Service.
“Through an analysis of reported crime, it became evident that not all extortion related crime is being reported to the SAPS.
“Hence an appeal is made to those affected to report it through our toll-free number (0800 314 444).
“Information shared on the toll-free number will be dealt with confidentiality,” said police spokesperson Malcolm Pojie.
He said the task team is made up of experienced and highly trained detectives who are supported by intelligence operatives to investigate extortion related crimes.
“The team is steadily making inroads into this phenomenon. The safety of all inhabitants remains the priority of the South African Police Service,” he said.
Their KwaZulu-Natal counterpart has turned to the public to help locate suspected extortionist Linda Hlengwa.
A warrant for his arrest was issued in connection with cases of illegal possession of a firearm and illegal possession of ammunition.
“Hlengwa, who also goes by the name ‘Mjinja’ or ‘Putin’ is also wanted in connection with a string of extortion cases. He is allegedly terrorising business people in and around the Mariannhill area.
“Hlengwa’s warrant of arrest was issued by the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court on September 9,” said police spokesperson Robert Netshiunda.
Anyone with information about Hlengwa’s whereabouts, can contact the investigating officer on 079 889 9733 or anonymously Crime Stop number 08600 10111.
