DURBAN - The Mi7 National Group in Pietermaritzburg has warned the public that there has been a spike in copper pipes.

“Mi7 National Group has noted an alarming increase in the rate of theft of copper piping from residential and business properties,” the Mi7 National Group said.

The company said it was evident by the number of cases attended to in the last two weeks by Mi7 armed response, where copper piping was stolen from client and non-client properties.

National Mi7 Group urged the community to be mindful of the spike and to take the following precautions:

  1. Make sure you have effective perimeter security such as fences, walls, barbed wire, or electric fencing.
  2. Install CCTV surveillance systems to monitor yards and perimeters or install outdoor beams which trigger your alarm when motion is sensed.
  3. Copper pipes can be disguised. For example, painting them black or green may give the appearance of plastic from afar.
  4. Ensure your yard is well lit.
  5. Ensure your yard is clear of debris which can provide cover for would-be criminals.

“It is also important to report any scrap metal outlet which purchases suspected stolen copper material,” the Mi7 National Group said.
