Durban - Isipingo police are investigating a case of car hijacking after a courier van driver was hijacked and robbed of the contents of the van.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Nqobile Gwala said: “It is alleged by the complainant that on November 11, 2022, at 9.30am at Alexandra Avenue, he was hijacked of his vehicle and various parcels and a cellphone were taken.”

“The complainant managed to get inside the vehicle and drove off. The matter is still under investigation,” Gwala added.

PT Alarms reported that the PT Alarms tactical K9 unit and metro police responded quickly to a report of a hijacking in Alexandra Avenue in Isipingo, and recovered a courier van with the driver who had been kidnapped as well.

The private security company said the PT Alarms tactical K9 unit was alerted to the hijacking of the courier van via a WhatsApp crime group.

“On arrival at Alexandra Avenue, it was discovered that the driver had been taken with the vehicle after he was accosted by three suspects at gunpoint. The PT tactical officer and metro police searched the area and found the vehicle and driver near the Uganda informal settlement,” PT Alarms said.

The van was escorted back to Alexandra Avenue, where the driver fetched his crew and intended to open a case at Isipingo SAPS, the company said.

“It is alleged that the suspects arrived in a white Suzuki Ertiga,” PT Alarms said.

PT Alarms urged motorists to be on high alert when fetching or dropping off staff or family members.

“Be mindful of your surroundings and do not antagonise the suspects, as they can be ruthless and can cause harm and injury, possibly resulting in a fatality,” the company said.
