Durban — Eight suspects are expected to return to court on Thursday for various crimes following their arrest.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Nqobile Gwala said that on Wednesday at 3.30am, the Provincial Special Investigations and Tracking Task Team and the Stabilisation Team followed information regarding a group who were said to be in possession of firearms at Santi in Mariannhill, west of Durban.
“Police proceeded to a house where they found four men. Police found a pistol and 49 cellphones on the property,” Gwala said.
All four suspects, aged between 23 and 28, were arrested and detained at Mariannhill SAPS for unlawful possession of a firearm and possession of stolen goods.
Preliminary investigations revealed that two of the suspects were linked to a robbery case that was reported at Marianhill on August 12, 2022.
“It is alleged that six unknown men robbed a business at Wendolins Road in Santi and stole cash, a pistol, liquor and cigarettes before they fled. A case of business robbery was reported at Mariannhill SAPS,” Gwala said.
She said that the suspects appeared before Pinetown Magistrate’s Court on August 18 and were remanded in custody until August 25.
Gwala said later on Wednesday, the police officers proceeded to a petrol station in Westville after they were alerted about a motorist found using a bank card that did not belong to him.
“The vehicle was traced to a petrol station in Chesterville where four occupants were found in the vehicle. Forty credit cards were recovered. It is alleged that the four men were waiting for a person that was going to collect the credit cards for fraudulent activities,” Gwala said.
She said that the suspects aged between 28 and 36 were arrested for theft and fraud.
They appeared before the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court on August 18 for possession of stolen property and were remanded in custody. The matter was adjourned to August 25.
