DURBAN - Many people were left injured when a vehicle ploughed into a tuckshop in the Phoenix area of Clayfield on Tuesday night.

KZN VIP Medical spokesperson Gareth Naidoo said they responded to a patient with serious injuries after the vehicle crashed into a local shop and trapped the patient under the wreckage.

Naidoo said the patient was freed and stabilised before being rushed to the hospital.

He said other patrons sustained minor injuries but refused to be taken to the hospital.

He said it appeared the driver failed to stop at the intersection where the shop is located.

“It is alleged that the driver was tested for blood alcohol content because there was a query of intoxication but he could not confirm that,” Naidoo said.

He said it was “quite a hectic scene”.

He added that KZN VIP Response assisted in keeping the area clear.
