DURBAN - RUNNERS were distressed following the rule that they must be fully vaccinated against Covid-19 to enter the Durban 10km City Run on October 31.
This comes after the runners’ Covid entry and participation criteria on the website indicated that all participants would need to be fully vaccinated or be willing to undergo a rapid antigen test on the day of the race to receive accreditation.
Participants would be considered fully vaccinated if they have had the two Pfizer shots, with the second dose having been received seven days prior to the event, or they have received one dose of the J&J vaccine at least 28 days before the event.
Coach and founder of Lindokuhle Athletic Club, Lindokuhle Ngema, said they were puzzled by the decision as they had already entered the race when they saw the “new rule”.
He said they ran in the same race in Joburg last month without these new requirements. “What has changed now that the race is in Durban?”
Nathi Phetha, of Glenwood, a seasonal runner, said the requirements were indirectly forcing people to vaccinate.
Jaqueline McClean, one of the Run Your City Series Event Team organisers, said the participation criteria was made available on the website before entries opened.
She said the measures were put in place to deliver a safe event for all parties involved.
“Proof of vaccination card, personal identification or bar code will be required to prove their vaccination status. Participants not fully vaccinated will have to take the rapid antigen tests at registration before receiving accreditation.”
She said the cost of the test would be accounted for by the participant.
“We realise the cost of the test will not suit everybody’s budget, however the health and safety of participants will always be a priority.”
