DURBAN - The uMngeni Local Municipality has started off with a budget of R300 000 to conduct jet blasting of stormwater drains.

That was according to mayor Chris Pappas in a tweet on Tuesday evening.

Pappas said the municipality had started conducting jet blasting of stormwater drains. The process aims to unclog drains to reduce the effects of stormwater on its roads.

“R300 000 has been set aside for this process. It is definitely not enough but we will aim to do more with less,” Pappas said.

The municipality said an external service provider had been hired to unclog the drains. The jet blasting started on Tuesday.

“Papers, plastic bags, soil and stones were removed from drains near the municipality’s technical services offices. One of the stones lodged in one of the drains had to be tied with a chain and yanked out using a TLB (tractor loader backhoe) as it was too big to be pulled out using hands,” the municipality said.

“In the coming weeks jet blasting of stormwater drains is expected to be done in the Howick CBD, Merrivale, Howick West, Hilton and Mpophomeni.”

Meanwhile, in the eThekwini Municipality a number of roads were flooded during heavy rains.

Last week, it was reported that roads in Riverhorse Valley were flooded and the river bank was overflowing.

Sydney Road near King Edward VIII Hospital was also flooded.

The middle of the Nandi Drive bridge towards Newlands East was flooded.
