Pietermaritzburg – The Msunduzi Municipality caught the driver of a van dumping items illegally in Temple Street.

A fine was issued and the driver was asked to clean up his mess.

The municipality said it was more than just an illegal dumping issue – the van’s licence expired in 2018 and the driver, a foreign national, had no documentation.

“The driver has been arrested and the vehicle was impounded,” the municipality said.

Meanwhile, eThekwini Municipality ward councillor Sakhile Mngadi said despite their best efforts to keep their ward clean and to ensure that people who were caught dumping illegally were prosecuted, there seemed to be an attitude of disregard in how people managed their refuse.

A very small amount of the refuse in our ward came from outside, Mngadi said. It was most often businesses and residents in the ward dumping on our streets.

“I have been working closely with DSW law enforcement but it seems that the message isn’t sinking in. Just this morning (Tuesday) an individual was caught on camera coming out of an apartment block, walking down a road and dumping the entire block’s refuse under a tree on a busy road,” Mngadi said.

“This invites people to dig through these (bags) and is responsible for the mess in the area. As the councillor I can only do so much, this area won’t get clean until everyone living here develops a zero tolerance to this filthy behaviour.”

Mngadi added that the incident was being investigated and if the body corporate was found responsible, the entire building would be fined.
