Durban — A man apprehended after an alleged rape has been established to be a wanted serial rapist.
The discovery was made on Monday afternoon after private security company Pro Secure’s specialised response unit (SRU) members received information about a rape that occurred in the Chatsworth area.
Pro Secure said that contact was made with the victim and a full description of the suspect was given. The Pro Secure control room immediately activated all units in the Chatsworth area and a search for the suspect was conducted.
“The suspect was spotted in the Shallcross area. As he was approached, he attempted to escape. The members gave chase and he was successfully apprehended,” Pro Secure said.
“With the assistance of SAPS Chatsworth Trio Crimes unit, it was established that the suspect is a wanted serial rapist in the area and currently linked to three rape cases.”
Pro Secure applauded its members for their quick and effective response, which resulted in the successful arrest.
Pro Secure gave the Daily News a case number it had received from the police, which was dated October 2022, but the publication had asked the police to check the case number with a November date too.
Upon checking it, police spokesperson Constable Thenjiswa Ngcobo said: “It is alleged by a 16-year-old victim that on October 21, 2022, at 12.30pm she was coming from school, walking near Gay Sand bushes when she was approached by an unknown male who dragged her into the bush and raped her. A case of rape was reported at Chatsworth police station and the matter is under investigation.”
