RENOWNED producer and theatre manager Pieter Toerien, alongside the Cape Town Opera and in conjunction with the Dramatic, Artistic and Literary Rights Organisation Proprietary Limited (DALRO), have promised audiences a “jaw-dropping” and “dazzling” performance of My Fair Lady.

The production is set for The Playhouse in Durban from 8 to 16 March.

This production aims to mesmerise theatre-goers with an extraordinary cast, stunning costumes, and breathtaking staging that encapsulates the elegance of Edwardian London.

This latest adaptation, inspired by George Bernard Shaw’s Pygmalion, tells the timeless tale of Eliza Doolittle, a spirited Cockney flower girl whose transformation into a refined lady under the guidance of the domineering Professor Henry Higgins captivates the imagination.

Audiences can expect to be serenaded by iconic hits such as ‘Wouldn’t It Be Lovely,’ ‘I Could Have Danced All Night,’ and ‘On the Street Where You Live,’ saturating the show with the wit, charm, and heart that have solidified this musical as a classic pièce de résistance.

“We are pleased to share that several performances of My Fair Lady are already sold out! If you haven’t purchased your tickets yet, now is the time. Don’t miss the opportunity to experience the magic of this beloved classic,” said Linda Bukhosini, The Playhouse Company’s chief executive and artistic director.

With tickets flying from box-offices, the demand is indicative of the show's esteemed reputation and the allure of its rich narrative.

Directed by Steven Stead, the production infuses fresh energy into the classic story. Musical direction by Kevin Kraak promises to invigorate the iconic Lerner and Loewe score with lush orchestrations and soaring vocals.

The artistry of Greg King in set and costume design promises to transport viewers straight to the early 20th-century London, while Duane Alexander’s choreography will inject dynamic movement, enhancing the overall theatrical experience.

The cast features South Africa’s finest stage talents, with Leah Mari’s portrayal of Eliza Doolittle poised to deliver a performance steeped in passion, authenticity, and depth, a perfect recipe for an unforgettable theatre experience. The musical has previously enchanted audiences with an astonishing 2717 performances and has garnered six Tony Awards, including Best Musical, after a triumphant sold-out run in Cape Town.

As the countdown to the opening night draws near, theatre enthusiasts are in anticipation of what promises to be a landmark event on Durban’s cultural calendar.
