Lubrication is often overlooked, but it plays a crucial role in enhancing sexual pleasure and comfort. But it is important to use the right type of lubrication during sex, and this sex educator has explained why using baby oil is possibly the worst type of lube anyone could use during sexual intercourse.
Whether you’re experiencing dryness or simply want to intensify your sexual encounters, incorporating lube into your routine can make a significant difference to the experience.
Lube acts as a barrier, preventing friction between skin surfaces during sexual activity.
This reduces the risk of irritation, discomfort, and potential injuries.
Adequate lubrication can significantly enhance sexual pleasure for both partners.
It allows for smoother penetration and movement, making the experience more enjoyable and satisfying.
For those using condoms, lube can help prevent breakage, ensuring optimal protection against sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
Many women experience vaginal dryness, particularly during menopause or due to certain medications.
Lube can help alleviate this discomfort and make sex more pleasurable.
It is however important to choose the right lube.
Baby oil tends to be one form of lube that many reach for simply because it’s so reasonably priced and easily available.
While it might be great for your skin as a moisturiser and seem harmless, it’s not the best form of sexual lubrication.
“Using baby oil as a lubricant isn’t recommended as it can cause breakage with condoms, irritate the vulva and/or vagina and cause infections,” says sex educator Kelley Nele.
“Overall it is one of the worst alternatives to use alongside petroleum jelly and lotion,” she adds.
Here’s a further breakdown of why you should not be using baby oil as lube.
Leads to infections
Baby oil is often petroleum-based, which can disrupt the natural balance of bacteria in the vagina.
This can lead to an increased risk of infections like bacterial vaginosis and yeast infections.
Condom failure
Oil lubricants, like baby oil, can weaken female and male latex condoms, increasing the risk of breakage and unplanned pregnancy or sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
Irritation
Baby oil can irritate the delicate skin of the genitals, especially when used frequently.
Unlike water-based lubricants, baby oil doesn't mix with bodily fluids. This can lead to dryness, irritation, and even infections.
Difficulty washing off
Petroleum-based products can be difficult to remove from the skin, potentially leading to further irritation.
Instead of using baby oil, these are types of lubricants to consider.
Water-based
This is the most common and versatile type. It's suitable for most people and is compatible with latex condoms.
“The best lubricant for sex is water-based lube, for a number of reasons. It’s the most natural and therefore perfect for sensitive skin, it doesn’t cause breakage with condoms, and it’s sex toy friendly,” says Nele.
“As for feeling, it closely resembles the feeling of natural lubricant. It does wear faster, so frequent reapplication is necessary.”
Silicone-based
Known for its long-lasting properties, silicone lube is a good choice for those who want a product that doesn't dry out quickly. It's also compatible with both latex and silicone toys.
