DURBAN - An alleged business robbery suspect was arrested after KwaMashu detectives conducted an intelligence-driven operation to search for a gang of criminals who robbed a food outlet in the area last month.

Provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Nqobile Gwala said the operation yielded positive results after the 33-year-old suspect was arrested on Wednesday.

Gwala said the suspect, who was also linked to another business robbery committed this month, was found in unlawful possession of a 9mm pistol with several rounds of ammunition.

Describing the events of last month’s robbery, Gwala said it was alleged that on March 15 a group of armed men entered the premises of a food outlet located at P section in KwaMashu.

According to police, the suspects held the staff and customers at gunpoint.

“The suspects took cash from tills and robbed customers of their cellphones. They fled the scene by stealing one of the customers’ vehicles,” she said.

Gwala added that the vehicle was later found abandoned in KwaMashu.

“A business robbery case was opened at KwaMashu police station for investigation,” she said.

Police said the suspect was arrested on charges of business robbery and unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.

He is expected to appear before the Ntuzuma Magistrate’s Court on Friday.
