As much as Volvo likes to think of itself as a rival to the big three German carmakers, it has never had a proper performance machine to take on the likes of BMW's M3 and Merc's C 63 AMG.
That, folks, could be about to change if there's truth in a recent report by Teknikens Varld. The Swedish magazine published spy pictures of a disguised S60 with widened wheelarches and a broader track and believes that this is Volvo's answer to the M3.
It also speculates that Volvo will be shoving a more powerful version of the Yamaha-designed V8, found in the XC90, under the new performance sedan's bonnet.
Of course, the hot S60 will be a product of Volvo's performance and racing division, Polestar. Its urge (believed to be in the region of 295kW) will be pushed through all four wheels via a Haldex all-wheel drive system.
It's all very hush-hush at the moment, and don't expect to hear more about the Polestar project until next year.
