The Durban University of Technology (DUT) has climbed to 11th place in the 2024 Times Higher Education (THE) Sub-Saharan Africa University Rankings, cementing its position as a key player in African higher education.
This marks an impressive rise from its 13th spot in 2023, underlining the university’s focus on powerful education and research.
In a statement by senior director of corporate affairs at DUT, Alan Khan said out of 129 universities across 22 countries in Sub-Saharan region, DUT emerged as the top-ranked university of technology and secured the fifth position among South African institutions.
The Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Research, Professor Fulufhelo Nemavhola, Innovation and Engagement, attributed the success to the university’s ENVISION2030 strategy.
“This recognition highlighted DUT's dedicated focus on research and innovation that drives societal impact. It reflected the hard work, excellence and dedication of our staff and students, as we continue our journey to improve lives and livelihoods,” he stated.
The THE Sub-Saharan Africa University Rankings aim to address the region’s unique educational challenges.
The 2024 edition included revised metrics covering leadership, ethics and African heritage. These measures prioritise inclusion, sustainability and African-driven impact areas where DUT has shown steady progress.
THE’s Chief Global Affairs Officer, Phil Baty, described the rankings as a tool to highlight universities’ contributions to national and regional development.
“The Sub-Saharan Africa University Rankings focus on metrics that matter most to the development of nations south of the Sahara. This ensures that institutions are recognised for their role in driving meaningful change across the continent.”
DUT’s rise in the rankings reflects its commitment to developing graduates who are equipped to contribute to societal transformation.
