The White River Magistrate’s Court in Mpumalanga has remanded 30-year-old murder-accused Ashwell Claremond Isaac behind bars when he appeared in court on Monday.

Isaac’s appearance followed his arrested by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation’s, (also known as the Hawks) Nelspruit-based serious organised crime investigation team during an operation conducted on October 27.

He was nabbed at Mbonisweni, Kabokweni Trust in Mpumalanga, according to Captain Dineo Lucy Sekgotodi, Mpumalanga Hawks spokesperson.

“Information was operationalised regarding an alleged suspect who committed murder in Cape Town during August 2024, and fled to Mpumalanga. A warrant of arrest was authorised against him,” said Sekgotodi.

The dedicated team traced Isaac to his hideout, and the warrant of arrest was executed.

On Tuesday morning, the Hawks said Isaac was still in transit, back to Western Cape where he is scheduled to appear before the Vredenburg Magistrate’s Court on the same day.

Meanwhile, provincial head of the Hawks in Mpumalanga, Major General Nicholas Gerber commended the efforts for tracing and apprehending the suspected killer who was on the run.

Gerber further emphasised that the Hawks in Mpumalanga will trace, arrest, and bring to book “all perpetrators who think they can hide” in the province.

“We serve the citizens of this beautiful country irrespective of which province needs our assistance,” said Gerber.

Last year, IOL reported that police in Mpumalanga arrested an alleged serial robber who has been on their “most wanted” list following a spate of robberies in the province.

At the time, Brigadier Selvy Mohlala said the 24-year-old was part of a criminal group that has been terrorising the Mpumalanga community for almost a year.
