Pretoria - Small businesses have a significant role in the economy and are the hope to create employment in the country riddled with high number of unemployed people.

Aspiring entrepreneurs often need guidance on how to start a business, where to look for funding, how to write a business plan and properly plan everything.

In this regard, The Townships Project will be having a two-day symposium next month with the aim to reaffirm its commitment to empowering township and rural businesses across South Africa.

The Building Better Businesses Symposium is an annual online event.

The chairperson of The Townships Project, Judith Chinkumbi, said it was extremely important that township-based businesses were given supportive structures to thrive.

“It creates a ripple effect that goes beyond the notion of just making them operational. Small businesses are the cornerstone of our economy; they are responsible for job creation and aiding our high unemployment rate.

“The development of small township businesses is a critical component of South Africa’s post-pandemic economic growth and recover.”

Chinkumbi said they wanted to provide entrepreneurs with the necessary skills to thrive in the business world.

“We recognise that small businesses are the heartbeat of South Africa’s economy. When we empower small businesses, we give them the necessary tools for growth and sustainability.

“We propel them to continue being key contributors to socio-economic development in our society.”

Chinkumbi said they have crafted the symposium in a way that speaks to real life challenges small business owners encounter in their day-to-day interactions.
