Pretoria - Mayor of Tshwane Randall Williams engaged with the youth in Eersterust about the dangers associated with drugs and substance abuse.

He also discouraged them from the habit that ruined the lives of many young people and adults in the community.

The activation was part of the City of Tshwane’s ongoing effort to fight drug and substance abuse within communities.

Williams was joined MMC for Health Rina Marx and local Councillor Benjamin Laurens.

“Drug and substance abuse is a major problem in our communities, and therefore it is important that we work together to protect our young people and families from the

destructive impact of substance abuse and drugs,” he said.

Williams said the school also faced various challenges that needed immediate attention.

Although public schools were the responsibility of the Gauteng Department of Education, the City assisted where it could.

“The City’s Health Department has been driving a strong campaign to assist communities impacted by drugs and substance abuse.

“We also took the opportunity to visit the Eersterust Community Health Centre that forms part of our Community Oriented Substance Use Programme, which the City runs in partnership with the University of Pretoria," said Williams.

The programme aims to prevent, treat, rehabilitate and reintegrate people affected by drugs and other substance abuse.

At least 16 operating sites have been established across all Tshwane regions.

Williams said the City also had a 24-hour toll-free HopeLine to provide support for matters related to substance abuse.

He said those in need of assistance can contact the HopeLine on 0800 611 197 or 0800 467 347.
