The incident has embarrassed the host city, angered the police and government, unleashed a storm on social media, and dominated news coverage of South America's first Olympics.
Team USA CEO Scott Blackmun clarified the incident involving Gunnar Bentz, Jack Conger, James Feigen and Lochte early on Sunday in Rio and apologised for what he called a "distracting ordeal".
