Springbok Sevens coach Neil Powell says they are going to make more use of their bench in their Cape Town Sevens Cup semi-final against New Zealand today (4.34pm kickoff).

The Blitzboks got a scary wake-up call in their 2017/18 World Sevens Series quarter-final against Fiji earlier on Sunday, when the Fijians led 21-12 at halftime, while the hosts were their own worst enemies at times in the first half.

They managed to pull it together in the second, though, and escaped heartbreak to secure a 31-26 win.

"We had an early wake-up call against Uganda last week, and hopefully this was the only one this weekend," Powell said.

"The guys kept their composure when we were behind and they did well to get the game back. I know they have it in them to be successful.

"The message (at halftime) was that if we keep the ball, then we can score. Also that we needed to muscle-up at the rucks and maintain control of the game.

Those things were actually said before the match as well, but sometimes the guys have to feel it first.

"It's going to be a tough semi, but you'll never get an easy one anyway. I think we're really going to depend on all 12 players, we only used 10 in this game."
