CAPE TOWN - They waited eight long seasons to finally bring the trophy home, but now the Blitzboks rule the sevens universe! And you can welcome back your heroes at the Cape Town International Airport on Tuesday at 10am.
Coach Neil Powell was part of the last Springbok Sevens side to clinch the World Sevens Series in the 2008/09 season.
There have been a number of close calls since, with the South Africans ending as runners-up in five out of the last six seasons. During that time, New Zealand won four overall titles and Fiji two – the latter adding Olympic gold in Rio last August.

The Blitzboks finished up with a bronze medal, and were determined to take that final step in the 2016/17 World Series. And didn’t they just. Captain Philip Snyman’s outfit won five out of 10 rounds – Dubai, Wellington, Sydney, Las Vegas and Paris – and reached another three finals.
“I can’t believe it’s the end of the season. We wanted to win everything, and I think we came as close as one can get to playing a perfect season,” Snyman said.
While they lost in the London Sevens quarter-finals at the weekend, the Blitzboks still took the Plate, having already wrapped up the World Series title in Paris the previous week.
On Tuesday, you can catch a glimpse of your heroes as they arrive back home at the Cape Town International Airport at 10am.
