The KwaMashu African Film Festival (KAFF) is set to dazzle film lovers once again as it returns from December 10 to 15, celebrating its 21st year with a vibrant programme that promises to highlight the richness and diversity of African cinema.
Hosted at the K-Cap Ekhaya Multi-Arts Centre in KwaMashu, this year’s festival is poised to be bigger and better than ever, featuring an impressive line-up of film screenings, workshops, and engaging panel discussions.
As a cultural beacon for emerging filmmakers, KAFF brings together a curated selection of African films, encompassing feature presentations, insightful documentaries, and captivating short films.
Opening the festival on December 10 will be the much-anticipated screening of Love Lottery, directed by Mlungisi Mhlanga. The film tells the daring story of a spirited young woman who inadvertently assists her ex-boyfriend in winning the lottery, leading her down an exhilarating path where love and ambition intertwine.
Featuring rising stars from KwaZulu-Natal, including Nombulelo Mhlongo, Nelisa Mchunu, Thabo Malema, and Philani Brown, the film showcases incredible local talent.
Founder of the festival, Edmund Mhlongo, expressed his excitement for this year’s milestone: “We are thrilled to celebrate the 21st year of the Kwamashu African Film Festival, which will provide a platform for filmmakers to share their stories and showcase their talent.
“As we turn 21, we are reminded of the symbolic key that opens doors as one moves from one phase to another in life. As we say, life is a movie. This year marks a crucial milestone for an initiative that is committed to creating opportunities for those who need it the most to break into the film industry.
“We believe that African stories have the power to inspire, educate, and entertain, and we look forward to celebrating these stories with our audience.”
Alongside the thrilling film line-up, KAFF will host an array of workshops and masterclass sessions led by industry experts.
This year’s roster of speakers includes acclaimed film figures such as Lucky Simayile, Siphesihle Cele, Nompilo Maphumulo, Amanda Madida, and Gugu Mzobe, providing invaluable opportunities for emerging and independent filmmakers to learn and connect.
One of the festival’s highlights is the much-loved ‘Hosting a TV Family’ segment, which thrilled attendees last year with a meet-and-greet featuring the Sibongile and the Dlamini families. This year, audiences can expect another surprise family to make an unforgettable appearance.
As KAFF draws to a close on December 15, festival-goers will be treated to the screening of ‘Amathambo’, a poignant film by Sabelo Ndlovu and Busani Mbili. Starring Siphesihle Cele, Mpume Mthombeni, Mlungisi Ndebele, Lihle Shoba, Sabelo Ndlovu, and Busani Mbili.
‘Amathambo’ delves into a family’s quest for healing and acceptance as they confront their troubled past.
